christmas scares me

it's that time of the year again - when we have yet to even hit December but people are already pushing and shoving their ways into the malls for christmas presents. i was watching the news about people shopping in the states. i was only enlightened about this whole "day after thanksgiving sale" thing just this week when girls at work wanted to take me with them. i passed on it as it's been one of my few days off this entire month. but what i saw on the news about the sales made me very very happy that i didn't venture out on the 8 hour car ride into maddness. apparently people were pushed over, trampled, stepped on at a number of stores today. police were called in to a number of stores across the country to break up fights.
stuff like that always makes me wonder...how important is it to keeping buying "stuff"? I'm not a hippy so I do my fair share of shopping and I'm not above anyone here when i say this but at what point does purchasing something justify knocking people over?
mob mentalities scare me. christmas shopping scares me - that's why i'm already done with all the shopping for everyone i love. the rest will have to settle for a gift card or online purchases.
